Format Painter in Google Sheets
Format Painter is the tool or feature which is available only in the menubar in Google Sheets. To access the Format Painter in Google Sheets, follow the steps listed below:
- Step 1: Open the new Google Spreadsheet.
- Step 2: Now on the homepage, click on the Format Painter tool as shown below.
- Step 3: The tool starts working.
Note: It is activated when you click it once and deactivated when you click it twice.

Let’s consider we have the following dataset. If we see the following dataset, we have formatting in Column D and no formatting in Column E.
Now follow the steps as listed below to do format painter in Google Sheets:
- Step 1: Select the cells where the formatting has been applied. In our case, we are selecting Column D.
- Step 2: In the toolbar, select the Paint Format icon. The format painter is now active. You will notice that the icon turns green.
- Step 3: Now select the cell where you would like to copy the formatting. You will see the formatting being copied from columns D to E.
It’s important to note that you can only utilize the format painter only once when it’s been activated. In order to enable the copied formatting again, we will have to activate it again by clicking the icon in the toolbar.
Furthermore, when you choose a cell and click the paint format icon in the toolbar, the formatting is copied. When you select a target cell of the same size, the exact formatting is replicated. The formatting, however, repeats when you select a broader range.
Furthermore, format painter can be used to duplicate conditional formatting rules as well. When you copy-paste the conditional formatting, the formula references will adjust if you utilized formulas in the conditional formula.
